Madison Grove Farm is a nonprofit equine rescue and sanctuary in Winlock, Washington, providing a safe home for horses, donkeys, and a mule. Every animal comes to us with their own history, personality, and needs, and we believe each deserves care, companionship, and the opportunity to live comfortably among their own kind.
Our work begins with the animals. Through daily care, rehabilitation, and relationships built on trust and choice, we create a place where horses and humans can learn from one another.
Entirely volunteer-run and donor-funded, Madison Grove Farm welcomes people of all ages and abilities to experience the sanctuary through volunteering, observation, and time with the herd. All experiences are free and arranged by appointment.
A Sanctuary Built Around the Horses
Sanctuary life looks different for every horse who comes through our gates. Some arrive needing rehabilitation or specialized care. Others are older, have lost their homes, or simply need a place where they can settle into a herd and feel safe again.
There is no single path forward for the animals in our care. We spend time learning who they are, what they need, and how they want to participate in life here. Sometimes progress means rebuilding trust or learning something new. Other times, it means giving an older horse the comfort of familiar companions, good food, and the freedom to simply be a horse.

Rescue and rehabilitation are rarely quick or predictable. Some horses need veterinary attention, nutritional support, or specialized care as they age. Others need time, consistency, and patient handling to regain confidence in people and their surroundings.
We work with each animal at their own pace, adjusting their care as their needs change. For some, Madison Grove Farm becomes their permanent home. When appropriate, we also help horses find suitable new homes, including assisting local owners with placement when we cannot take another animal into the sanctuary.

or many of the horses who come to Madison Grove Farm, this becomes their home for the rest of their lives. Some are well into their thirties and beyond, while others live with chronic conditions or physical limitations that require additional attention.
As their needs change, so does our care. That may mean special diets, medications, veterinary support, smaller herd groups, or simply a quieter place to spend their days. We work to keep each horse comfortable, connected to companions, and able to enjoy life in ways that are meaningful to them.
Growing older doesn't mean a horse has nothing left to offer. Our seniors continue to teach us about patience, relationships, and the importance of being seen and valued at every stage of life.

Horses are social animals, and their relationships with one another are an important part of their well-being. At Madison Grove Farm, we spend a great deal of time observing our herds, learning who seeks out whose company, how friendships develop, and how each horse finds their place within the group.
We believe horses need more than food, shelter, and veterinary care. They need companionship, opportunities to move and explore, and the ability to make choices. As their needs change, we adjust their living arrangements while paying close attention to the relationships that help them feel secure.
Some of the most meaningful moments here happen when we simply give the horses the space and freedom to be themselves.

From the beginning, Madison Grove Farm was meant to be a place where both horses and people could find something they needed. Over the years, we've watched relationships develop between our rescued horses and the people who spend time with them, sometimes in ways neither expected.
Our experiences may involve observing the herd, grooming, groundwork, or simply sharing quiet time together. We welcome people with different backgrounds, abilities, and levels of horse experience. The horses are never expected to participate just because someone has come to visit. Their willingness, comfort, and choices are always part of the experience.
We believe there is something valuable to be learned when people slow down, pay attention, and allow a relationship to develop at its own pace.

Madison Grove Farm began in 2008 with a simple belief that horses and humans could help one another heal. What started as a dream of creating a safe place for horses has grown into a nonprofit equine rescue and sanctuary on a forested hillside in Winlock, Washington.
Over the years, we've welcomed horses, donkeys, and mules with very different histories and needs. Some arrive needing rehabilitation or specialized care, while others simply need a safe place to grow older. Each has helped shape the farm into what it is today, a place built around patience, relationships, and the understanding that every animal deserves to be treated as an individual.
The people who have become part of Madison Grove Farm are just as much a part of its story. Volunteers, families, veterans, and community members have helped us build something that goes well beyond caring for horses. Nearly two decades later, we remain entirely volunteer-run and donor-funded, with a commitment to making our experiences accessible and free of charge. It's a place where people come to help horses, and often discover something meaningful for themselves along the way.
Experiences With Horses
At Madison Grove Farm, we welcome people of all ages and abilities to spend time with our horses, donkeys, and mules. You don't need horse experience to find something meaningful here.
Some experiences begin with simply sitting quietly and observing the herd. Others involve grooming, groundwork, or spending time alongside a horse at liberty. We take our cues from the animals, allowing their comfort, willingness, and individual personalities to guide each interaction.
We offer individual and small-group experiences in a welcoming, supportive environment. Every experience is free of charge, made possible by the volunteers and donors who believe in what happens when horses and humans have the opportunity to connect.
